Office management assistants

Managing processes, supporting people, and exploring diverse areas of responsibility

You’ll gain insights into the diverse tasks of office management – from personnel planning and employee support to contributing to monthly and quarterly financial statements. With every step, your understanding of our complex organization grows. You’ll help ensure that processes run smoothly, learn how to organize business trips, check invoices, and prepare financial reports. Throughout, you’ll work with modern IT systems and develop a strong sense for numbers, workflows, and communication.

What makes you a great fit

  • You have a secondary school diploma (MSA) and good grades in German and mathematics. 
  • Numbers and IT (MS Office and SAP) are right up your alley. 
  • You enjoy organizing, think in a structured way, and can keep track of even complex tasks.

Mechanic

CONSTRUCTION MECHANIC

Metal construction from planning to installation

You will manufacture and assemble metal structures that enable port operations – from railings and platforms to complex components. You will learn to read and implement technical drawings, process sheet metal and profiles, apply welding techniques, and assemble components. In the process, you will develop manual dexterity, technical understanding, and a keen eye for precision.

What training focuses you can expect

  • Prepare and evaluate technical drawings
  • Define machining processes or assembly plans
  • Form and cut components and metal structures
  • Connect sheet metal, pipes, profiles, or assemblies
  • Apply various welding processes
  • Assemble components and assemblies (e.g., railings, platforms)
  • Dismantle metal structures

  • You have a good ESA degree and demonstrate strong performance in STEM subjects.

Nautical

Port skipper

Your future flows along the waterways

You will assist with the transport of goods, loading and unloading, and exciting maneuvers on the water. You will learn how to safely operate harbor vessels, use towing equipment, and maintain the technology on board. You will ensure that everything remains ready for use through maintenance and care. You will develop technical skills in mooring and hauling, become familiar with the port area, and learn what is important in navigation, driving, and tides.

You will start your apprenticeship at the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), joining the team of Flotte Hamburg. There you will learn on approximately 50 different ships, such as unloading, police, and sounding vessels, pilot boats, icebreakers, and barges.

What training focuses you can expect

  • Mooring and casting off
  • Rope work
  • Operating the towing gear
  • Maintenance work on the ship and engine
  • Operating and maintaining all on-board equipment
  • Correct behavior in dangerous situations
  • Loading and unloading harbor vehicles
  • Knowledge of the entire harbor area, navigation, and laws and regulations relevant to shipping
  • General knowledge of tides and use of tide tables

  • Compensation according to TVAuzbi-AVH, with a training salary of approximately €1,200 gross in the first year of apprenticeship.

Technology

Surveyor

Working with high-precision measurement technology

You survey the port area, take measurements of location and elevation, and evaluate the data on the computer. You work with laser scanners, GNSS receivers, drones, and CAD programs. You create digital plans, models, and cross-sections, accompany construction projects, and ensure that everything fits perfectly, from planning to billing.

What training focuses you can expect

  • Setting up graphic data processing systems
  • Learning the regulations for producing and updating maps, plans, and sketches
  • Performing surveying calculations
  • Creating plans and drawings using various programs on CAD workstations
  • Performing elevation and position measurements using various methods
  • Conducting field comparisons using maps and aerial photographs

Electronics Technician for Industrial Engineering

Switching and controlling electrical systems

You will install electrical systems, commission them, and ensure that everything runs reliably – whether bridges, locks, or flood barriers. You will learn how to install machines and drive systems, program automation technology, and troubleshoot malfunctions. In the process, you will develop technical understanding, logical thinking, and a keen sense of safety and precision. You will work with modern technology and gain insights into the entire port infrastructure – from energy supply to the control of complex systems.

  • You have a good MSA degree and demonstrate strong performance in STEM subjects.
  • Technology is right up your alley – you are interested in electrical systems and how they work.
  • What sets you apart is your spatial and logical thinking skills.

Business Administration

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration

Controlling, Marketing & Human Resources combined

You will learn how to analyze, plan, and optimize business processes – and how to contribute to the further development of the port with in-depth knowledge in areas such as finance, controlling, human resources management, marketing, and strategic management. You will work on real projects, develop solutions to economic issues, and gain insights into working with internal and external stakeholders. The close integration of theory and practice will prepare you optimally for your future role as an economically minded specialist.

What makes you a great fit

  • You have a high school diploma or technical college entrance qualification with good grades – especially in Math, German, and English.
  • You are interested in economic relationships and want to understand how companies are managed strategically and operationally.
  • Initial experience in the commercial sector – e.g., through internships or part-time jobs – is an advantage.
  • You have a good level of English and feel comfortable working in digital environments.
  • You enjoy structured teamwork and you work in a solution-oriented and responsible manner.

Computer Science

Bachelor's degree in IT Engineering / Computer Engineering

From hardware to AI

You will learn how IT infrastructures are created, how innovative operating systems and firewall solutions are developed and tested, and how to professionally understand complex processes between systems and development environments. You will deal with topics such as hardware programming, system architectures, data analysis, and artificial intelligence.

  • You have a high school diploma or technical college entrance qualification with good grades – especially in Math, Computer Science, or Physics.
  • You are interested in IT security and want to understand how to protect systems and identify vulnerabilities.
  • Initial experience with programming or network technology is an advantage.

Between office, construction, and business

You will work on innovative construction projects, learn how to deal with internal and external stakeholders, and gain insights into the technical, economic, and organizational aspects of civil engineering. Your daily work will be as varied as the port itself – between the office, construction site, and project meetings.

What makes you a great fit

  • Applicants should have a high school diploma or technical college entrance qualification with good grades in STEM subjects.
  • An interest in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering is essential.
  • Good English skills, both written and spoken, are expected.
  • Initial practical experience in a technical or manual field is considered an advantage.
