Inland shipping in the port of Hamburg

The Port of Hamburg does not only play a vital role for sea vessels in Europe, the 'Gateway to the world' is also an important place of transshipment for inland shipping. From specific demands like a car loading ramp or the waste disposal, to pilots or berth regulations: we are the right contact. 

Berths for Inland Vessels


For inland vessels, the following berths without cargo transfer are available for waiting periods:

Billwerder Bucht, Ausschläger Elbe Deich: 2 water stairs (no. 1 and 2)

Peutehafen: 1 water stair (no. 10)

East Peutehafen: Dolphins (no connection to land)

Steendickkanal: 2 water stairs (no. 3 and 4)

Aue Hauptdeich: 3 water stairs (no. 2.3 and 4)

Süderelbe (southern Elbe): 4 water stairs (no. 71, 73,75, 82 )

Süderelbe (southern Elbe) East of the railway bridge: 4 water stairs (no. 1, 2, 3 and 4)

Holstenkatenpfähle: Dolphins (no connection to land)

Rethe Ufer: Dolphins (no connection to land)

Reiherstieg Ewersveen: Dolphins (no connection to land)

Reiherstieg Ewersveen: 2 water stairs (no. 2 and 3)

Kattwyk Süderelbe (southern Elbe) North and South: Dolphins (no connection to land)

Lauenbrucherhafen: 1 water stair (no. 83) ​

Various locations in the Port of Hamburg have an onshore power supply for commercial shipping with payment based on a credit system.

Electric power distribution system

Arrival and departure of inland vessels must be reported in writing to the competent authorities within 24 hours, indicating the type, name and captain of the vessel, its call sign / calibration number and flag, size and draught, load, shipping agent, arrival date and berth.

Inland vessels and watercrafts operating in the port must be occupied or guarded during their stay in sea ports taking all due care in accordance with the traffic, weather, tide and ice conditions.

In the event of an inland waterway tanker as defined in section 30, paragraph 1 of the sea shipping ordinance coming from the Upper Elbe requires a harbour pilot, the pilotage for the southern stretch of the Elbe will be assumed at the Finkenriek water stair #4 and the pilotage for the northern stretch of the Elbe at the Entenwerder road vehicle loading facility. When ordering harbour pilotage, the position where the pilotage should be taken over must be specified.

It is possible to load road vehicles for transport on inland waterways at the car loading ramp at the Entenwerder pier at the Entenwerder custom harbour (Entenwerder 7, 20539 Hamburg). Compliance with the conditions of use is required.

The water stairs constructed for inland waterway transport are connected to the municipal waste system.

Cargo, passenger and cruise ships using the port of Hamburg, the Bille and its canals below the Bille pumping station, as well as the Oortkaten and Zollenspieker ports for longer than five calendar days after the day of arrival must pay the demurrage fee for the use in excess of this time period.

The fees can be found in the general terms and conditions of the Hamburg Port Authority, an institution governed by public law for private agreements on the general use of the Port of Hamburg.
