St. Pauli Elbtunnel

A legend and yet still in everyday use

The St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel has not long celebrated its hundredth birthday. It is a protected monument and a symbol of Hamburg.

However, for many of Hamburg's inhabitants it also just a part of their everyday life. Cars, cyclists and pedestrians use the shortcut from the Landing Stages to Steinwerder on the south side of the Elbe. However, with its unique atmosphere, the historical building has also become a favourite location for events and presentations.

Opening times

Pedestrians and cyclists: Open continuously
Exception: 31.12. (New Year's Eve) from 21:00 – 04:00 closed

Motor vehicles: Open Mon – Fri 08:00 – 18:00
Closed Saturdays, Sunday and national holidays!                               
General renovation of the twin tunnels

New traffic control from Monday 5 October 2009, due to the general renovation of the twin tunnels:

Mon – Fri 08:00 - 13:00 one-way road traffic from St. Pauli to Steinwerder
Mon – Fri 13:00 to 18:00 one-way traffic from Steinwerder to St. Pauli

Cyclists can use the tunnel all day, however between 05:30 and 20:00 they must cycle in the same direction as the motorised traffic or dismount from their cycles and push their bicycles in the opposite direction along the designated footpath.
Pedestrians: no limitations

Usage fees

Pedestrians and cyclists: free of charge

- One-way ticket €2.00 (obtainable from the automatic ticket machines during vehicle operating times)
- Vehicle monthly pass: €60.00
- Vehicle annual pass: €600.00

During the period of general renovation of the twin tunnels, different fees apply.
Maximum vehicle dimensions:
  • Track dimension: 1.90 m (distance between the outsides of the wheels)
  • Width: 2.20 m
  • Length: 9.50 m
  • Height: 3.40 m
